The Dualism Contests

The contests are over. Thank you for playing!

Rules and Prizes
1 – Tweet Your Heart Out!
2 – The Two “Anchor” Scenes
3 – The “Darling” Scene

The Groundrules

To begin with, you’re not obligated to buy anything whatsoever in order to participate in any of the contests described below.

That said, some of the contests do presuppose a detailed knowledge of the content of Bill DeSmedt’s new science thriller Dualism (PerAspera Press, 2014), so it might improve your chances of winning if you read the book first. 😉

You can find Dualism on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or ask for it at your favorite local bookstore. Alternatively, you can order it direct from Per Aspera Press here.

The Prizes

The prize for each of the contests below is a ticket to FanFest, a cocktail party for thriller authors and fans being held in conjunction with this year’s ThrillerFest.

Please note: these prize-tickets are for entry to the FanFest party only. In particular, they do not cover the cost of registration at the larger ThrillerFest conference (see here for that), nor do they include travel or hotel expenses.

What they do include, however, is two free drinks and an opportunity to rub shoulders with your favorite thriller authors (Bill DeSmedt included, natch!) for an hour and a half on Friday night July 11, 2014 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.

The Challenges

Challenge #1: Tweet Your Heart Out!

This one’s for all you Tweeters out there. Every day between the May 13th Dualism launch and the contest’s end on June 15th, the text of a new tweet (itself a quote drawn from the book) will appear in the textbox at the end of this section. Simply click on the “Tweet” button below the textbox, and then confirm that tweet in the dialog box that comes up. (At this point, you can edit the text of the tweet before posting — if you really feel you must — but don’t change the #DualismTheBook hashtag, as we’re using it to tally your results.) Once you’ve clicked “Tweet” a second time in the confirmation dialog box, that’s all there is to it — you’ve just posted the text as a tweet from your Twitter account.

Once that’s been accomplished, the final step is to reach out to all your Twitter followers and ask them to retweet the tweet you’ve just posted. Each day, every day.

Asking your followers to retweet is critical for winning, since ONLY retweets will count toward your final score! (What this means is, there’s no point in clicking the Tweet button on this page more than once a day — it won’t improve your standing in the sweepstakes, and it might annoy your Twitter followers.)

The top five tweeters — meaning the ones who have scored the highest number of retweets by June 15th — will each win a coveted FanFest ticket!

So, here it is — your daily tweet for May 20, 2014:

“Epilepsy’s a hardware glitch.
The hardware of Timah’s brain is fine.
It’s her software, her mind, that’s the problem.”

And now … make every tweet count, by clicking the “Tweet” button below to tweet this shameless appeal to your Twitter followers:

Trying to win a ticket to FanFest 2014, and you can help!
Just retweet my previous tweet, the one with the DualismTheBook hashtag.
Thanks!

That’s it! Good luck and Happy Tweeting!

Challenge #2: The Two “Anchor” Scenes

Here’s the way Bill put it in his Big Thrill e-zine interview:

When I first started to write Dualism, I had only two short scenes in mind. I knew they both had to be in the book, although I couldn’t figure out where in the book they should go. All the rest of the writing was really about trying to tie those two scenes together.

The challenge is to guess which two scenes those are. The first reader to email in and correctly name the chapters and scene numbers for those two literally seminal scenes will win a coveted ticket to join Bill at the FanFest party being held during this year’s ThrillerFest.

That’s basically it. All your email entry needs to do is identify the two scenes in question, specifying their chapter and scene number (where the scenes in a chapter are the individual passages of text in a chapter demarcated by the “yin-yang” scene-separator symbol).

Make the Subject line of your email “Dualism Two-Scenes Contest,” and send it to twoscenes@dualismthebook.com. And … you’re done!

Challenge #3: The “Darling” Scene

Here’s the way Bill put it in his Big Thrill e-zine interview:

I must confess I violated Hemingway’s sage advice [“You’ve got to kill your darlings.”] at least once in the course of writing Dualism. That is to say, there’s one “darling” scene in there that I couldn’t bring myself to kill, that I in fact fought tooth and nail to save — ask my editor!

Readers, can you guess which scene that is? There’s another FanFest ticket waiting for whoever emails in the right chapter and scene number first.

The same basic rules apply: All your email entry needs to do is identify the single scene in question, specifying its chapter and scene number (where the scenes in a chapter are the individual passages of text in a chapter demarcated by the “yin-yang” scene-separator symbol).

Make the Subject line of your email “Dualism Darlings Contest,” and send it to darlings@dualismthebook.com. That’s it, you’re done!

Finally …

You may enter each of the email contests up to a maximum of five times (i.e., five separate emails from the same email address, with all further emails from that address being disregarded).

The Twitter contest is under no such restrictions: feel free to, as the Challenge title says, “Tweet Your Heart Out!”

Regardless of which contest or contests you choose to enter, the email address or Twitter account you use to submit your entries will be used solely for purposes of notifying the contest winners.

Winners will be announced at midnight US East Coast Daylight Savings Time on Monday, June 15, 2014. Good luck!
